Jess Williamson New single "Wind on Tin"

We’re in the midst of an occult revival, in large part because people are searching for meaning. Look at the rise of Tarot, astrology apps, crystals, and smudging kits for sale alongside fast fashion; and even online yoga.

Jess Williamson’s Sorceress, her fourth album and second with Mexican Summer, arrives during this cultural moment. Fittingly, it addresses these issues via personal epiphany and offers revelation in the real sense of the word: you listen to it, learn from it, and leave changed.

Sorceress is polished and assured and it hits immediately—like a modern classic should. It does fit with her previous work, but it then goes miles beyond it. From her first home recordings that bled into her proper 2014 debut Native State,

Williamson’s music has kept a ragged folk energy at its core. The Texas singer and songwriter makes deeply felt songs that orbit around her powerful voice, a voice that’s strong and vulnerable, big-room flawless, quietly ecstatic, and next-to-you intimate. When she has something to say, even when it’s a kind of Dolly Parton whisper, you listen.

"Wind on Tin” is a lush, introspective, and quietly anthemic song that moves between acoustic strums and pedal steel to smoother synths and atmospheric saxophone. It feels like it’s soundtracking a moment, and it is.

We follow our narrator as she travels down Highway 90, the two-lane highway that connects the remote desert town of Marfa, Texas to I-10. Her reasons for being there become clear as the song unfolds; she’s not a tourist this time, but rather—attending a funeral. There are moments in life where deep grief can make the veil between worlds very thin. Our narrator thinks she hears the voice of God singing in the desert wind. She is either tuned in, insane, or both.
